Semen Freezing Date

Good day

A representative from Vet Fertility Technologies (VFT) will be collecting semen from dogs for freezing purposes on      Saturday 22 June 2019

The recommendation is to do two ejaculates per dog on the day.

Translocation Regulations: If you wish to freeze semen from dogs for possible export purposes, we need to know which country it will possibly go to. This is because different countries have different rules and regulations and diseases they wish the stud to be tested for BEFORE the semen is collected.

Costs for the required tests are additional to the semen freezing costs.

Serology testing that may be required for export of semen:

·        Brucella canis

·        Leptospirosis

·        Leishmania infantum

·        Optional - Aerobic culture

·        Stud’s DNA profile if not yet done. Please note that this requirement is just applicable to breeds that are registered with KUSA.

 Special note on Rabies:

Rabies vaccinations should be up to date. This means that a veterinarian must have signed the vaccination booklet next to the appropriate vaccination given date and the stickers depicting batch numbers and expiry dates. Note that self-administered and self-signed rabies vaccination booklets by breeders are not valid.

When titer tests are going to be done for dogs and or semen that are translocating to countries that require this test, breeders must consult with their veterinarians to make sure that the correct rabies vaccine is given. This is because not all rabies vaccines consistently give the adequate required titer. Countries that require rabies titer tests are Europe, Australia, New Zealand (all Island countries), Nigeria etc. Rabies titer tests are not required for America and Canada.

_____________________________________________________________

Note: clients with breeds that have a tendency to be nervous are advised to bring the male with a female on heat on the day of the collection.

We routinely collect one semen sample followed by a second collection approximately one hour later. This is to maximise the quantity of frozen semen obtained. Please allow sufficient time for the semen freezing procedure.

The client will be notified on the day of semen collection whether the semen is of adequate quality for freezing purposes.

The client will be notified within a few days of collection whether the semen indeed did freeze well. Please remember that in some dogs the semen may be of excellent quality prior to freezing and may indeed freeze poorly. In contrast semen that is of poor quality to start off with will always be worse after freezing and it is therefore not worth pursuing preservation of such samples.

Following the semen freezing, a comprehensive report will be issued which will detail the post-thaw quality of the semen and the number of doses obtained. No reports will be issued if client accounts are not fully settled.

PLEASE NOTE: The number of straws/doses obtained from each semen freezing procedure will depend on the quantity and quality of sperm ejaculated by the dog on that day, and the semen’s post-thaw quality. Therefore, the number of inseminations from the frozen semen obtained can only be determined AFTER the semen freezing process.
